The Dream

Fuller Life was founded in 2012 with a dream of providing post-graduate training to developing therapists pursuing full licensure while simultaneously offering quality, affordable therapy to the community. Dr. Amy Fuller is the founder and Clinical Director of Fuller Life Family Therapy bringing many years of counseling experience and expertise in the field of Marriage and Family therapy to help facilitate the professional development of post-graduate fellows through supervision and ensure the highest quality of care for clients at Fuller Life.

The Struggle

While pursuing her doctorate in Marriage and Family Therapy, Amy Fuller discovered a startling contrast in post-graduate training. Her journey toward licensure was lonely, unstructured and costly, sharply differing from her husband’s experience in medical residency. His training was programmatic and community-focused, serving underserved and indigent populations, and integrating group learning with practical service and intensive clinical training.

A New Approach

This contrast inspired Dr. Fuller to envision a new approach in mental health training. In 2012, she founded Fuller Life Family Therapy Institute, modeled after the medical residency framework. Thus, she recognized the potential to not only improve the training of therapists but also to address the disparities in mental health outcomes, especially in marginalized communities.

Fuller Life was established with a dual mission: to provide exceptional, competency-based training for therapists and to serve historically underserved communities. The institute implements a counseling residency model, offering practice-based feedback and supervision at a rate four times the required minimum. This intensive approach is coupled with a formalized educational curriculum and a learner-based spiritual-psychosocial training context.

Meeting Community Needs

By linking the training program to a sliding-scale service model, Fuller Life bridges the gap between therapist training and community needs. This model not only ensures quality-assured therapy services for at-risk populations but also aligns with the aim of addressing mental health disparities. Dr. Fuller’s vision brings to life an institute where the development of therapists and the provision of accessible mental health services go hand in hand, embodying a commitment to fostering long-term improvements in community mental health.

The Fuller Life Family Therapy Institute is a not-for-profit charitable organization with full 501(c)(3) status with the IRS. Contributions are tax-deductible. We are grateful to the various individuals, churches, and organizations that partner with us in our dream. They make it possible for us to serve the people in the Houston Area regardless of their ability to pay.
